On the way to Las Vegas and along the Strip, Las Vegas USA - September 2012

We travelled from Zion National Park to Las Vegas as part of our Globus Canyon Tour.  Las Vegas is indeed sitting in the middle of a desert as the photos will show.  We had our final night with the tour group at the Treasure Island Casino which was a good experience.  We thoroughly enjoyed our Globus Tour of the Canyon Country and were having a "rest break" in Las Vegas for five days before flying to Boston to join another Globus Tour to take us up the East Coast through to Canada & Niagara Falls back to New York.

We stayed one night at Treasure Island Casino and the rest of our stay was at the Mandalay Bay Casino which was right down the airport end of the strip away from the maddening crowd.

There is so much to see and do at Las Vegas as well as the gambling.  It is a Disneyland for adults where there is 24/7 action - as much as you can take.  Inside the Casinos you would not know if it is 8.30 am or 8.30 pm - it never changes.  The machines and betting tables are played at all hours of the day and night.
There were poker machines in all kinds of places such as supermarkets, laundromats and even the airport so nobody ever missed out on an opportunity to gamble.

I am not a gambler but could fill my day in very easily with all the available entertainment - a lot of it is free and there are some good shows and spectacular exhibitions such as the Bellagio Fountains, The Volcano at the Mirage (which is amazing), The Sirens of TI at Treasure Island just to name a few.  The Casinos themselves were incredible with their reproductions such as the Venetian, Paris, Caesars Palace and New York, New York - just to name a few.  There were countless restaurants to choose from and some great outlet shops for bargain shopping.  Five days were not enough for us to cover all of Las Vegas but we gave it our best shot.  It was nice to have some R & R time at the Mandalay Bay Beach after a hectic bus tour.
Everything in Las Vegas is big and over the top.  We did get to see some of the weddings for which Las Vegas is famous for - there were quiet a lot in the time we were there.

There is a long distance between casinos and a lot of walking is required.  There are taxis and a shuttle train that are helpful for getting around.  The footpaths have over-bridges to cross over to the other side of the strip and also some shopping malls tucked in between the casinos.

Las Vegas was a very unique place and I did enjoy my time there.  Even though I am not a gambler I could go back again just for the experience and I found the outlet shops had better bargains than New York which did surprise me.  We were fortunate with the weather - it was hot and sunny everyday with balmy nights which were great for exploring Las Vegas at night.
