Monument Valley was well worth the effort it took to get there. It is an amazing place and it is easy to see why all the film directors flocked there to get the right settings for their cowboy movies.
We travelled from Lake Powell as part of our Globus Tour for a day tour of Monument Valley. It was very hot - just as you would imagine it would be and the natural beauty of the huge rocks with their amazing formations was just incredible. There were miles and miles of nothing and then these rocks rise out of nowhere and you can just imagine the cowboys and Indians, stage coaches etc of the wild west.
All of the rock formations looked very familiar and you were left with the feeling that you had to go home and watch some of the old movies that would have featured the same rocks over and over and are somehow sitting in my subconscious memory.
The area was of course commercialised for tourists just like us with gift shops and museums to view. I enjoyed wandering through the old photos and references to the movies that were made there. I have taken a photo of some of those mentioned so I would remember which movies to get out.
I loved the setting that was put together for us with a man on a horse sitting out on a ridge. For a $2 donation you could have your photo taken with him if you were willing to walk out to the ridge. That setting was exactly what I expected from Monument Valley so I was not disappointed.
