Lakes Entrance, Victoria - October 2014

We were very unfortunate to arrive at Lakes Entrance in bad weather.  It is a very pretty place but very exposed to the wind.  It was very cold, windy and showery which is not a lot of fun when touring.  It was so cold we bought a couple of beanies to keep our head warm and had on several layers of clothes.

We stayed at the Silver Sands Tourist Park which was a handy spot to the shops and beach. it cost $29 for the night for a powered site.

We were originally planning on stopping for two nights but the bad weather moved us on.

We had visions of maybe a lazy day on the beach but that was not going to happen. We had a walk through the shops and along the beach.  The coffee shops were popular on that kind of day.
We had a look at the golf club, visited Jenny's Lookout, 90 mile beach, did some grocery shopping and caught up with our laundry.

The next day we decided to move on to Phillip Island to see the Penguin Parade.

We were intending to stay an extra day at Lakes Entrance but the weather was not good.  It was too wet and cold to go to the beach - so cold in fact that we bought a couple of beanies to keep our head warm in the icy winds.

We decided to travel on to Phillip Island which was not on our original plans.  The countryside was beautiful - so lush and green with some lovely scenic spots over the countryside and ocean.

It was easy travelling and the rain cleared so we could enjoy the view.

We stayed overnight at Cowes Caravan Park on Phillip Island and had a campsite right on the beach front.  Cost was $40 for the night as we chose to stay on the Island rather than stay the other side of the bridge.  We were happy with our site and spent most of our time there exploring the Island.

We arrived about 12.30pm  and spent the afternoon looking at Nobbies, the Race Track, the Golf Course and the Chocolate Factory.  That evening we went to see the Penguin Parade which was a wonderful experience.

We had to be in position at the beach before sunset (advised to be there 6.45 pm at the latest) and had to wait in place for it to start getting dark which was when the penguins do their scamper out of the ocean and up the beach.  We were not allowed to take photos because they are very timid and best left to their own routine of running up the beach and finding their burrows,  They were amazing and did not seem to mind people walking up the fenceline while they were looking for their homes.  Nature is a wonderful thing and I will not regret sitting in the freezing cold for two hours waiting for them to come. We had good seats at the front beating a lot of the tourist busloads which quickly filled up the stands - so be there early if you want a good spot. The cost of the tickets to get in was $33.20 (Concessional)

The Motor Bike races were on the following day at the Race Track so they had a security lock down and we only got to see the front entry.

Nobbies was a very picturesque place with a lot of information about Phillip Island.

We did of course have to call into the Chocolate Factory and check out their wares.  The prices were set for the tourists so we just looked and bought some samples.

Phillip Island is a very unique spot and there is a surprising amount of homes on the Island.
