The above photos were taken at Guangzhou Airport while we were waiting for our connection flight to Haikou on Hainan Island. We left Sydney Sydney at 11.00am on Tuesday morning and arrived about 10.30 at night at Hainan Island so it was a long day.
We were met at Haikou Airport by our Chinese Guide (Harry) who escorted us to Mission Hills by bus.
Our rooms were spacious and comfortable with a large balcony overlooking the complex. It is a huge resort with restaurants, shops, pro shop, hairdressers, massage, beauty therapy, multiple swimming pools both indoor and outdoor.
We were checked in for a three night stay and unfortunately caught the tail end of the typhoon which had brought high winds and heavy rain. There were a huge amount of trees blown down on the courses. They are just new courses and the trees had not established themselves so the root systems were shallow.
Our first day at Mission Hills we played the "Vintage" Course which was lovely and close to the complex. It was showering lightly in the morning on and off & we managed to get our first nine holes in comfort. Then the heavens opened and we were deluged with rain and had to come in as the greens and fairways were covering in water. That was disappointing as we were having a lovely day. My friend Judy who was originally a Gold Caddie working at Mission Hills on the mainland, was Caddie Master at Mission Hills at Haikou. Judy organised our caddies & organised our bookings for us.
The second day we were to have been playing the "Blackstone" course but it was closed due to the bad weather. The boys decided to play in the rain and got in 18 holes on the No 5 course. The girls decided not to play golf so Judy took us shopping to Haikou. The better shopping places were flooded in so Judy took us to Haikou Downtown which was quite an experience. I don't think many Europeans visit there because we got some funny looks. Judy bought us all an umbrella as the rain persisted all morning. Lauren & I bought a pair of rubber sandals each to save our good shoes from being ruined. They turned out to be one of our better buys for $2 and we wore them all through the holiday. The girls spent the afternoon in the indoor swimming pool area while the boys finished golf.
The 3rd day we decided that we would not play golf as the "Blackstone" Course and the "Vintage" courses were still closed and the rain was still falling. Instead we travelled to Sanya which was a 4 hour trip and visited a local village along the way.
It is a shame that the weather was so bad as we could not appreciate the resort as much as we would have otherwise done. It is a beautiful place to stay & the courses once properly established will be magnificent.
Our rooms were excellent & the staff polite & efficient. The rain caused havoc in the outdoor areas and we could not get out to the lovely BBQ areas and outside pools. The Pro Shop was expensive and none of us did any shopping there. There were other shops, cashcard tellers etc etc. Everything you would expect from a 5 star resort.
A return visit would not be out of the question but a more careful selection of seasons would be appropriate. I have noticed this last week has been perfect over there.
