Our first couple of days in New York were chilly, showery & low cloud. When we got our first sunny day we decided to take our chances with the queues and head for the Empire State Building. We did not purchase any tickets in advance because of the weather problems but we did not have any problems getting tickets on the day. We arrived about 10.30 in the morning and the queue was just at the front entrance.
There were people selling tickets on the street that would supposedly get us in quicker, however we had been warned that it is only a shortcut to the lifts where you meet up with the rest of the queue to go through security. We could not see a lot of advantage in that for the extra money.
As it turned out we got up to security with a minimum wait - mainly feeding people into the lifts. There was a hold up at the security section but it was not that bad. The staff did a good job of moving people through as quickly as possible and we were in and out of the building in about two hours which was much better than what we expected.
We were impressed with the museum that was on the top floor which showed photos of the building in various stages of being built. It was very interesting looking at all the information on the building and the great photos taken of the construction workers.
The views were fantastic - stretching right out over New York in all directions. We were not too familiar with New York the day we were at the Empire State Building and were not too sure of all the areas we were looking at. Later in the week we saw the same views from the Rockefeller Center which was a good variation and we could relate to the city better then.
It was a good experience and worth the queues to see great views of New York City.
