between the time we first saw the Rockefellow Centre
and the second time the skating rink materialised and the skaters
were out in full force
We had already visited the Empire State Building and had a ground view of the Rockefeller Center on our City Tour and we were in two minds as to whether we really needed to go to the Top of the Rock.
Curiosity got the better of me and we decided that as we had a good clear weather day we should make the effort to get to the Observation Deck to check out the views.
I am very happy that we did as the views were spectacular and I think better than the Empire State Building from a photography point of view. We could see for miles and get a really good overview of New York. As we had been in New York for a week we had a better idea of what areas we were looking at. The queues were not too bad - again it was the security check that was the hold up & the rest was easy. They did a good job of managing the crowds as there is no booking required - however you do need to purchase a ticket downstairs before going up to the security area. Security was not a problem as long as you adhered to the same rules as the airports - common sense rules - no sharp or dangerous objects.
It was well worth the effort to get there. Although the views are the same as from the Empire State Building they are viewed from a closer up perspective. Having a good weather day helped as it would have been very disappointing on a low cloud or foggy day. It is open from 8.00am to midnight on 50th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues. I would have liked to have done a night viewing but we were too tired at the end of our long days.
