Alcatraz Island, San Francisco USA - August 2012

Alcatraz Island at San Francisco was definitely one of the good highlights of our trip to America.  I was not sure of what to expect on the island but it turned out to be a really good experience.  We all had options of getting earphones for a self guided tour which I would recommend everyone to do. It is the best audible tour system that I have ever used and you really do need it to get a true perspective of what life was like on Alcatraz Island.   It is easy to use and well presented.

Each section of the island has its own special history and story and each cell block is the same.  Allow plenty of time to walk around - it is not a tour you could do in half an hour.

I was impressed with how the volume of people were managed as the boats to and from the island are continuous all day and crowd control would be important.  Prior booking of this tour would be necessary in the busy seasons as it is very popular.

The Island has been well maintained and we could have a good insight into how life was in those terrible days when it was run as a jail.  It is easy to see why so many inmates tried to escape.  The Island looks so close to shore anyone would be tempted to try to swim the distance.

We pre-booked our tour before leaving Australia and it included a bus tour around San Francisco prior to being taken to the Pier for the boat trip across to the island - costing $85 per head which at the end of the day we considered was good value.
