Sovereign Hill, Ballarat - October 2014

We had not calculated on how much there was to see at Ballarat and in hindsight we would have stayed overnight so we could have broken up our visit to the War Memorial and Botanical Gardens to a separate day.

We visited Sovereign Hill in the late afternoon and it was a very hot day.

There was a lot to look at and a lot of walking as the area was much bigger that I thought it would be.
Sovereign Hill is well worth the look as they have gone to a lot of trouble to keep it in the era of the Gold Mining days including the old buildings, mines, shops & theatre.  In addition the staff wear the traditional clothes of that era including the shop keepers, soldiers and gold miners.  The old houses were as they were in the gold mining days.  With the extreme heat of summer and freezing conditions of winter, one wonders how they all survived living in such basic comforts.

The cost was $75 for entry which would have been good value if we had allowed more time to look around.  We had a look through the shops, the old mines, the boiler room, climbed the tower where there was a good view over Ballarat.  There were tours we could have done through the old gold mines but we did not have time for that as we were travelling on to Bendigo for an overnight stay there.
