Moreton Telegraph Station, Queensland - Tuesday 28th June 2011
We travelled via Batavia Downs from Weipa to the Wenlock River where we stayed overnight at the Moreton Telegraph Station Camping Ground.
Moreton Telegraph Station Camping ground was a huge surprise to me. I knew we were going to be staying in tents for the night and I was prepared for a bed roll and sleeping bag. Seriously this was a rough as our five star camping trip got. We all had our own safari tent which was clean and neat and contained two single beds and a couple of small tables which was very acceptable. There was a men's and ladies shower and toilet block each and there was a communal kitchen and eating area where our meals were prepared for us.
The boys went fishing at the river before dinner but the big fish got away. We had a lovely dinner prepared for us & we used this occasion to have a "Dean Appreciation Night" in honour of our guide as he had made our trip such an enjoyable one with his knowledge of the area, the indigenous people and the birdlife and plants. Dean had a great passion for his work and we did appreciate having him as our guide. After dinner we all sat around the campfire, told a few jokes and sang a few songs. We were not allowed to take unlimited alcohol with us from this point on so we had to do our best to reduce our stock. I did my best not to waste the bottle of Baileys which was a prohibited drink by the alcohol management plans. Unfortunately I did not have enough friends to help me so we had to relinquish the bottle before we left.
Flooding is a major problem here as the Wenlock River takes a lot of water. You can see the sign up the tree (photo attached) of where a boat was in one of the floods. Mind boggling as you cannot imagine the river rising to that extent.
I was very impressed with this camp site. The owners & workers "Big"John & Christine & "Little" John were very friendly and keep the campsite clean & neat. I would recommend this place as a stopping point for anyone travelling through.
From here we travelled on via the Telegraph Track to Seisia where we were spending two nights.
