Weipa, Queensland - Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th June 2011
We travelled to Weipa from Musgrave via Coen (separate posting). Arriving late afternoon at Weipa.
Our accommodation was The Albratross Bay Resort which was a very comfortable stop over where we had large bedrooms with ensuite - hotel style. The amenities included a guest laundry, dining room, bar, large outside patio where we could sit and have dinner or a drink overlooking the water. There was a high fence enclosing the resort so that no one could get to the beach - being crocodile infested waters. We were happy to stay high and dry and enjoy the view. There was also a bottle shop attached where we could buy our drinks cheaper than restaurant prices. We had dinner that night out on the patio and it was a beautiful balmy night and we all managed to get great photos of the sun setting over the water (as in Perth WA). This was the only night that we had to pay for our meals - all others on the tour were included in the tour price.
In the morning we packed our bags and spent the morning checking out the Weipa Harbour where the bauxite mining takes place & watched the pumping station at the wharf in action. There were no ships in to be able to witness the loading but we did have a stop off at the waterfront. We did some shopping at Weipa shopping centre before travelling to Red Beach where the boys tried their hand at fishing. There were crocodiles in the water there so none of us went swimming. We walked along the beach and had a look at some of the monuments and interesting shrubs and had morning tea while we were waiting for the fish to come in. unfortunately we came away empty handed as there were only tiddlers nibbling. We did get to see a lot of stingrays jumping out of the water which is the closest we came to seeing any fish. There were a couple of large crocodiles across the water from where we were so we kept a close eye on them. We went back to the Albatross Bay Resort for lunch before setting off to the Moreton Telegraph Station.
