Thursday Island, Horn Island to Cairns Friday 1st July 2011

Our Thursday Island experience was a good one.  Our Cape York Experience finished at Seisia Wharf  when we boarded our ferry to Thursday Island at 8.00am. At this time we said a fond farewell to our driver and guide Dean Nulty who did a top job of looking after us on the Cape York tour.

We had a lovely day to look around Thursday Island.   We had time to walk the main streets of Thursday Island before we had a guided bus tour around the Island & up to the lookout where there was a fort and a museum.  We were very lucky with our timing as the 1st July is an annual holiday & celebration which included a church service, re-enactment of the first day that the aborigines saw a white man which was followed by an all day celebration by the locals.  We arrived just in time to see the re-enactment and still have time for morning tea before our bus ride to the lookout.

The ferry to Horn Island was 20 minutes late which did not matter as our plane to Cairns was an hour late getting us back to Cairns about 6.15pm.   We were booked in for dinner at 7.00pm so it was a scramble to get into our rooms to freshen up.  This was further complicated by the Resort not having Peter & I booked in for that night.  After much consulting with the staff they finally gave us an upgraded room for their error & we managed to make dinner just a tad late.

The Bay Village Tropical Retreat in Cairns  is a lovely place to stay , nice rooms,  Internet facilities, swimming pool, and  in house restaurant which was very convenient for tired travellers.
