Lancaster, PA USA - October 2012

We left Niagara Falls at 7.00am to get an early start in case we had delays in getting through the border from Canada into Pennsylvania, United States.  There can be long delays if a lot of buses arrive all at once and especially if the bus happens to be a greyhound bus carrying a lot of unrelated people not on organised tours and each person on that bus has to be individually assessed.  We got through with a minimum of delay and we had a good run through to Lancaster with one stop for lunch along the way.  The countryside was very rural and we travelled through the Appalachian Mountains and on to Lancaster.

Our lunch stop at a supermarket was interesting as they sold everything including alcohol, chemist goods, fast food lunches, gifts, deli and everything in between all under the one roof.  To buy alcohol we had to show our passports. The decorative pumpkins were there by the hundreds as Halloween was coming up.

As part of our Globus Tour we visited an Amish Educational Farm where we got a good insight into the Amish way of life and the history of the religion. The farmhouse and the farmyards are kept  in their original state.

That evening we had dinner at Hershey Farm with an Amish Family Henry & Linda, who shared their Amish meal with us at the restaurant. Their son Daniel spoke to us about his life growing up in the Amish society and his schooling and answered questions about his life.  We could take photos of the house and farm but not any images of them. We were invited the next day to visit their working farm. They were a lovely family and obviously very hard working and seemed to enjoy their separation from the world as we know it.

There was a large gift shop at Hershey Farm and they encouraged tourism to help to maintain the farm.
