Vietnam - Mekong River - April 2013

Today we visited the Mekong Delta (My Tho) for a one day tour cruising along a small creek to the Mekong River Estuary to Con Phung (Phoenix Island).  We enjoyed a motorised boat cruise on the river and row boats in the natural creeks to the quiet village in Ben Tre Province and a horse and cart ride back to our bus.  We visited orchards, a bee keeping farm, natural honey products and honey wine, tropical fruits, traditional music, a distillery, coconut and candy production and processing before returning to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City).  We stopped at a traditional garden restaurant at a local house for a Vietnamese Lunch.

It was a fascinating day visiting the natural beauty of the Mekong Delta and to witness the simple but happy life that the local residents seem to thrive on.  We were all given a bamboo hat to wear to protect us from the heat.  It was a very hot day and we felt the humidity.  We were lucky because there had been some heavy downpours in the days previous to our visit - so having fair weather was a bonus.  The bus trip to and from the Mekong Delta was very bumpy as the quality of the highways were not good.
