Margaret River WA Winery Tour - April 2011

We had a choice of bus tours that would take us around the Margaret River Region Winery Estates for wine tasting. The choices ranged from a 40 seater bus that went to 7 wineries (but we had to pick it up in the nearby town of Dunsborough) down to a small bus that went to 5 wineries, included lunch and picked us up and returned us to our Bunker Bay Quay West Resort for $70 per head. We thought that 5 wineries would be plenty in one day so we chose "Cellar d'Or" Winery Tours which proved to be a good choice. The wineries were at Yallingup and were boutique wineries (ie sold wines that could not be bought in bulk liquor shops throughout the country) and they were all pristine, peaceful estates.

Astuti was our driver and guide for the day & we travelled with other guests staying at Quay West Resort. We visited "Mongrel Creek", "Swooping Magpie" wineries and then stopped at the "Bushshack Brewery" for lunch & drinks (included in tour price) & their were some interesting varieties of beer there. After lunch we visited "Cape Naturaliste", "Windows Estate" wineries followed by a stop at the Natural Olive Oil Soap Factory at Wilyabrup which was a beautiful factory full of soaps, skin products and olive products as well as other gift items. The factory was established in 1995 because the children of the family suffered severe allergies - now the products are sold around the world. From there we visited "Knotting Hill" Winery which was the most picturesque of all the wineries with water views surrounding the wine tasting area.

Then of course we had our final stop at the "Chocolate Factory" which was wall to wall chocolates which were so tempting.

We enjoyed our day of wine tasting and ordered one dozen bottles of white wine from the "Swooping Magpie" Estate that took our fancy as well as a few reds from the other boutiques to have with dinner on our holidays. The dozen bottles of white cost $120 with an additional cost of $10 delivery to home which we could not believe. ($11 per bottle). Footnote: The wine arrived on cue on our doorstop on the day we had organised. Excellent service from interstate.

Astuti did a good job as our driver and guide and delivered us back to Bunker Bay in the afternoon & gave us each a gold embossed wine glass each from Cellar d"Or as a keepsake of the day. We all thought it was a good value day with very good service both from Cellar d'Or and the venues we visited.
